No, this is not a commercial for you to join a cult nor are we giving out sample drugs to deal with stress.

This is about examining stress itself. What is the cause of it and how can we get to the heart of the problem?

WHAT IS STRESS?

Certainly, everyone knows how stress feels. The mind is tense. It can be full of fear, anger or pain. Physically, the body follows the mind so the body too is strained by stress. Of course, the cumulative effects of stress can do much damage and cause illnesses to the mind and body. Some people even kill themselves or others because of it.

But what is this thing we call "stress?" Why is it so powerful that we succumb to it?

Stress is merely a reaction in the mind. By going directly to the mind, we can eliminate the cause of stress. Sometimes, we forget and blame people or things which we believe are the causes of stress.

That's a misunderstanding. The people or things are merely conditions, but they're not the cause. It's how the mind reacts to people, things or situation which causes stress to arise. It's only when we react negatively to the situation that stress occurs.

For example: Two people got laid off from work on the same day. The first person wasn't particular stressed by the news and viewed it as time off. The second person, however; reacted differently and blamed the boss and the workplace. Because his mind was so distressed by the situation and reacted with anger, he later came back with a gun and shot the boss and fellow employees.

This may seem like an extreme example, but you probably have heard about this kind of thing on the news.

So, what is the solution to stress? How can we not react negatively to an unpleasant situation? The solution is in the mind itself - the awareness of the mind. When we can consistently be aware of the mind (the one that's reacting); we can then change its reaction.

Neuroscience now has evidence that the mind or brain can be trained in the book called "Train Your Mind, Change Your Brain: How a New Science Reveals Our Extraordinary Potential to Transform Ourselves" by Sharon Begley. Professor Richie Davidson, who did the study on meditation, says "our findings clearly indicate that meditation can change the function of the brain in an enduring way."

The study shows that it's possible to train your mind to be free from negative emotions through the practice of meditation.

By understanding how the mind works, and how it generates stress; you can become aware of it and let go of the negative reaction. When you can consistently do this, your mind is always free from tension and experiences calmness, clarity, true happiness and inner peace (emotional balance).
